Well this is a place to start.
Just what is an SVX? Well it is this car that Subaru really screwed up on.

Oh Yeah How's that? Well they that is Subaru built this really great car. Actually, the Subaru engineers designed it. Not the marketing / sales team. Subaru was and maybe still is very big on engineering.

So they made this SVX. This really great looking car that is a head turner and very subtle. A person actually has to look at the SVX to notice the detail and then there eyes are stuck on it.

So they made this SVX and over engineered so many components on it. Very high quality items that would last a long time.

Then they really blew it. All the commericals for USA tv were turned down by the networks. The ads incouraged high speed driving! of all things high speed driving in a SUBARU in 1992!!! On heard of....... Tag lines on the ads like "You'l drive so fast you'll loose license!" Really come on encouraging high speed driving in a 1992 SVX. Well needless to say it did not sell well. At about $28k the Porshe and BMW had all the clout and kept the sales.

Then of course there were a few technical problems, wheel bearings and transmissions. The SVX was eatting wheel bearings and destroying the automatic tranmission. It only came with an automatic.

Talk about an extremely embarassing situation for Subaru. Can you just imagine what it was like to be working there? The SVX was not selling, the warantee claims were high and they had spent years putting the SVX together.

Well take any car with 230HP a top speed of over 130 mph, AWD and a high power ratio to the wheels and put in a few young drivers that beat the crap out of it and YES the tranmissions are going to break. Hey! it had nothing to do with that funky filter screen on the AFT cooler inlet. Honest. The SVX just dosen't like getting beat on for 3 hours without a break.

Then there is te wheel bearing PROBLEM. How can a car company not know how to put wheels bearing together? Why Why Why did they decide to split the inner race? All the other Subaru's had a solid inner race. Oh yeah it has to do with 140 mph top speed and bearing preload. Oh well a little to much preload and the bearings just don't last that long.

My SVX is a 1992. I got it 6 years ago and now I have driven it 193,345 miles. :) I do not have a garage and I drive it in the snow and the salt and I love this car. It is a fantastic car! It's way over designed for driving at highway speeds. Take a car that was made to go 140 mph by a car company that was trying to break into a new market and compete with Porsche and BMW and you know what you get? An SVX that will last a long time if you take care of it. An SVX that has been overlooked by many people just because it is not popular. Keep in mind that most people have never seen one let alone drive one.
